Enviroschools Learning

A few weeks ago the Makaraka School Juniors went to the Envirocentre to learn about how we can look after Papatuanuku better. We learnt about recycling, composting, and worm farms. When we returned to school, we decided to set up a worm farm for the school. Some students also read a story about Extraordinary Earthworms. We did some instructional writing about how to set up a worm farm. We also tried to incorporate some of our digital learning in our presentation. See if you can pick what we have been learning to do...

  1. Wow Tanemahuta! What fabulous learning you've been doing! I'm so passionate about doing great things for our earth and creating a managing a productive worm farm is such a great way to reduce the gases that are given off by the food waste sent to landfills. Worm farms take food waste and turn it into so many great things! Not only do we have a better way to deal with our food scraps, but also the vermicast and 'worm wees' given off are great for growing beautiful kai too!

I really enjoyed the way you explained the process of setting it up... and also how you used your Google Drawing tools to 'draw' your own worm farms too! What Cybersmart learners you are! And oh, you've just reminded me... I might need to go and feed my own worms!

I liked looking at your slide presentation about how to make a worm farm. It taught me that you can give food scraps to the worms to eat. It looks like fun.
